Statement Pieces: Tips on How to Select and Why They Are Important

Walk into any room within your home, this could be your living room, dining room, kitchen even the primary bedroom suite. Look around while asking yourself what one piece in this space stands out. It could be a lighting fixture, a piece of art, or furniture. Do you have one? If so, congratulations, you have a statement piece. If not, keep reading; having a statement piece can be important for so many reasons.

Statement pieces are great conversation starters. They can bring fond memories into your home, creating joy which also gives your space a personal touch. Statement pieces infuse your personality into your space and can be the starting point for a design theme.

When it comes to selecting a statement piece, we have a few best practices to keep in mind. For starters, we feel that having one statement piece is enough. There are certain times we will disagree, but as a general rule, one statement piece is enough for one room. Second, it works best when the piece is personal. For example, a piece of art that has a deeper meaning or a light fixture that was hand-made by a friend or local artist will hold its value within your heart and your home making it priceless.

Stay away from trendy pieces if you can. When they are outdated, they lose their “power” only to become a nuisance instead of a conversation starter. Trends come and go selecting a statement piece that means something to you won’t be off-trend.

Be mindful of scale. This is tricky but important. Statement pieces should not be the only piece in the room; they need to be accompanied and complimented by other pieces. And lastly, have fun with it. You want to enjoy showing it to your guests, talking about how you found it, selected it, got it home, and everything else in between.
