Do My Furniture Pieces Always Have to Match?

We get asked this question quite a bit. And the answer is No. Your living room furniture (or any other room, for that matter) does not have to match. But you do need a plan. Here are a few tips on how to design your living room with mismatched furniture, so it looks cohesive but also showcases your style.

  1. Select a Common Trait: This can be a color, style, or pattern. We recommend using Pinterest to help organize your ideas. If you want a modern minimalist space or a traditional room with a statement piece or two, this is a good tool to keep you focused.

  2. Combinations Can Be a Good Thing: Having the same fabric on chairs or ottomans that tie the space together, complimenting the other pieces, works well. For example, you can have two different chairs but have the same ottoman for each.

  3. Size is Important: Be mindful of balance. Having a piece that is overbearing will stick out and not in a good way.

  4. Color: It’s important to use complementary colors for your space. Using different shades of the same color will add some variety but also create cohesiveness.

  5. Reinvent Sentimental Pieces: Pieces that have been passed down from generation to generation are wonderful to have, but they may not in their original state fit into your space. The great thing about these pieces is that you can almost always update them! Paint, new hardware, reupholstering, all of these options usually work and give your “great-great-great” piece a place in your home that feels and looks good.

Remember, trends come and go. Symmetry is a trend; having everything matching may be your style, and if it is, then go with it no matter what the trend is, but if you don’t like the “matchy” look, then, by all means, we think you should have a little fun with your space!
