Vive Magenta

By now, you may have heard that Pantone has selected its color of the year. Vive Magenta. And you may be like some of us, thinking that is great, but what is the big deal?

Before we answer that question, we thought it would be interesting to do a little research on how the color of the year came to be. According to Pantone.com, The Pantone Colour Institute created The Colour of the Year in 1999 with the objective of engaging the design community and color enthusiasts around the world in a conversation around color. The first Pantone Colour of the year was Cerulean, a soft blue. The selection process involves experts from the institute who comb the world, looking for new color influences. The entertainment industry, fashion, and travel destinations are utilized as influences in the selection process.

Back to Vive Magenta. The following description of the shade itself is direct from the Pantone website.

“This year’s Color of The Year is powerful and empowering. It is an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying and a boundless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit, and inclusive of all.”

The definition does make it sound like a fun color to have around. If you would like to add a splash of this vibrant color to your space, here are a few recommendations that are a low commitment.

  • Throw pillows are always a good idea. Place them on your sofa to add a pop of color.

  • Artwork. This is easy to replace when you want a refresh and aren’t loving the boldness of this shade anymore.

  • Accent pieces. Frames, sculptures, vases, planters, wine glasses, all of these can be found in this shade.

  • Paint an old table. With upcycling still going strong, take any size table and paint it!

  • Throw Blankets. You can never have too many of these lying around, especially during the winter months.

Admittedly the color does have a certain fun, joyful feeling about it. So why not have a bit of fun with your home by adding a bold pop of color, one that you may already love or recently discovered. It doesn’t have to be Vive Magenta; it can be any color that you love. The point is to have fun with it.
