Rug Tips by Room

Who doesn’t love a good rug? However, selecting and purchasing one can be overwhelming. The most common mistake made when committing to a rug is size. It's confusing to know how big or small of one you need; measuring can be helpful, but when you add furniture pieces, there are other things to be mindful of, including material and pattern.

Below is a short list of things to be aware of when purchasing a rug organized by room. Hopefully, this is helpful, but our designers are here for you if you have any questions about size, material, pattern, or brand.

Living Room

  • Always have the front legs of your furniture on top of the area rug to avoid making the space feel off-scale.

  • When layering, ensure the second rug is about ⅔ the size of the first, so you can appreciate both textures.

  • Keep lifestyle in mind. Does your rug need to be washable?

Dining Room

  • Make sure all chairs comfortably fit on top of the area rug with room to move.

  • Material choice is essential, especially if you have a family. Patterns will help hide everyday life moments such as spills.

  • This rug should ideally extend past the ends of the table, about 8 to 10” on each side, also leaving space around the perimeter.

Bedroom

  • Consider the size of the bed. The larger the bed, the larger the rug.

  • Runners could be used on each side instead of one large rug. This option could save a little money and create a unique look for your room.

Entry Way

  • Open and close the door several times, noting the space between the bottom of the door and the rug.

  • Consider material and ease of cleaning. This is a high-traffic area and will need to be cleaned regularly.

  • Have fun with shape and size. Depending on the space size, you could be creative and have a little fun even changing it up for each season.

Last but not least, have fun selecting the various rugs for your home! Take your time to find what you love and will enjoy!
